Centenary Quay is the site of the former Vosper Thorneycroft shipyard. Originally purchased by the South East of England Regional Development Agency (SEEDA), the site was bought by Crest Nicholson in 2008. The £500m development will eventually comprise 1,620 new homes, a new supermarket, a library and nursery as well as shops, bars and restaurants. It is intended that a quarter of the new homes will be affordable homes - predominately social rented or part-buy/part-rent. The outline planning permission was granted by Southampton City Council at the end of 2009.
Phase 1 and 2 are complete and consist of a new public library and a nursery at the gateway to the development providing a direct link to Woolston High Street.
Up to 300 new jobs will ultimately be created in phase 3 that includes 329 homes, a supermarket, with additional retail and restaurant space.
Phase 4a has now commenced and will bring forward 185 new homes, a multi-storey car park and further restaurant opportunities.
Five of the 12 new leisure units at Woolston Waterside at Centenary Quay have been let. Supermarine, offering pizza, pasta and wine has joined Vospers, a new beer, burger and cocktail concept and Mettricks Waterside Coffee House which are transforming the dining offer.
