An iconic new five star hotel and apartment complex will open its doors in 2017 at Ocean Village and it will be a significant milestone for Nicolas Roach, Chairman of the operator and developer Nicolas James Group.

Waterfront living will be taken to a new level of luxury in Southampton with the much anticipated opening of the Southampton Harbour Hotel and apartment complex at Ocean Village.

Seen by Nicolas Roach as being the missing piece of the jigsaw, he believes the 85 bedroom hotel will be the catalyst for great things in the wider city.

“Our hotel will be finished mid-July and we will open gently during August and the first release of the apartments will be September.

“We believe our hotel, which will open as a five star, will lift spend in the city – people want quality and they are willing to pay for that.

“And when people stay in a hotel, they spend in the locality.

“I see this as the final piece in the jigsaw – and I still can’t quite believe we are responsible for that piece,” he confided.

A graduate of the University of Southampton, Nicolas explained how the city (and particularly Ocean Village) has a fond place in his heart.

“I started my career in Ocean Village at PwC, with an office overlooking the site where the Southampton Harbour Hotel is going to sit.

“Back then it was frustrating being there because it was a great marina but it had no life or vitality.

“Ever since my days of working in Ocean Village 20 years ago, I have hoped the city would have a top end hotel product complete with a world class spa, top quality gym and the city’s tallest restaurant and that is what we are going to do,” said Nicolas.

“On a personal note, I’m delighted PwC have decided to stay as it means another big name will be associated with Ocean Village and we look forward to people working there joining us for our healthy lunchtime campaigns.”

The success of his group of hotels to date adds credibility to what Nicolas has to say and he is optimistic his Southampton property will soon be winning awards too.

“We have 12 Harbour Hotels across the south. Our hotel in Brighton has just won The Sunday Times award for the Best Coastal Hotel in the country – and it’s that type of award I want to bring to Southampton.

“In Salcombe we took a hotel and re-positioned it and we had Rod Stewart staying there this summer,” he said.

Nicolas explained that often taking a development from concept to reality will see cutbacks and re-designs along the way but the Southampton project, which includes a luxury apartment complex has stayedtrue to its original intent.

“The contractors Bouygues, who also built Admirals Quay apartments, have ensured the original design intent. Often you find the quality or design gets watered down but we have held onto that iconic image of a superyacht for our design and that is what we are going to deliver.

“The apartments are going well with 40 per cent sold off plan which is pretty good. They are high quality apartments and we have designed them so they have marina views and balconies. They will also have access to our spa, a substantial gym and bar and a number of restaurants.

“You are really going to want to live in Ocean Village,” he said. Listening to Nicolas speak,he paints a picture of waterfront living and escape that is going to make Ocean Village irresistible.

“Our other restaurants below the apartments will offer something casual and fun, with lots of different brands,” he said.

Cruise passengers staying in a suite the night before they embark on their travels, can expect to be taken by boat to the neighbouring cruise terminal in a nod to the romance and glamour of the liners and days gone by and Nicolas wants to see Ocean Village once more become the venue for big sailing events.

“We have retained the event space at Ocean Village. This is the place where the Clipper Round the World yacht race left from and we want to see events like that coming back to Ocean Village.

“We have very big function facilities with decks and terraces so major events are definitely on our wishlist,” he said.
