Public Art Bows to the Past at BOW Square

A paint merchant, light ironmonger and cabinet maker are just some of the neighbours from Southampton’s historic past, who will be celebrated in an exciting public art project scheduled for unveiling at the city’s first Built to Rent development. Local artist, Daniel Crow of a-space arts, was commissioned to design and install a new piece of public art at Bow Square apartments, where Bernard Street meets Queensway, to commemorate the site’s significant importance.

Taking inspiration from the historic Back of Walls that Bow Square is named after, Daniel and his team began researching the history of those whose gardens backed on to the medieval wall close to the development. He explains: “There is so much history in the city, and we wanted to capture this in a special piece of artwork that would re-imagine the old medieval town Wall, and those who would have been here in Tudor times.

“The work is a celebration to those that lived along the Wall and will give new residents a sense of history, realising their proximity to the old town. It is a tribute to the surviving parts of the walls, which are still some of the best surviving examples of defensive medieval town walls in Europe.”

The conceptual sculpture, due to be unveiled in 2018, will consist of a 30-metre Corten wall with stone lattice design and a 4-metre tower with a gateway that will run across the development. The door of the gateway will display the names of those who lived in what was then English Street in 1454. It will be located in the communal garden of the development and will be hand crafted from Corten laser cut steel.

Daniel adds: “The laser cut design gives the impression of cut stone and mortar work and when lit, will create a dramatic effect transforming a two-dimensional structure into an immersive installation. Over time, the Corten material will form a stable rust-like appearance, matching the sand-stone colours found in the existing walls.

“The installation will be delivered as part of the courtyard works, as a giant jigsaw that onsite builders will install under our supervision.”

Bow Square, set on the former fruit and vegetable market site, will offer 279 rental apartments with long-term tenancy agreements, a host of amenities and a high standard of service from a dedicated on-site team. The development is a collaboration between Atlas Residential and Rockspring Property Investment Managers LLP, which will offer one and two bedroom apartments, from September 2017.

Jonathon Ivory, Atlas Residential Managing Director said: “The ‘Bow’ in Bow Square stands for ‘Back of Walls’ which pays homage to the site’s heritage and the historical walk that visitors and residents can take in the area, so it was truly fitting to work with Daniel and his team ensuring this history was not forgotten.

“We look forward to seeing the finished artwork in situ, linking phases one and two of our development together. It will add another creative touch to the scheme, and create a unique focal point in the gardens for residents and visitors to enjoy.”

Bow Square will feature a host of hotel-style services including a fully equipped residents lounge offering a stylish and comfortable space to meet and socialise with friends and other residents, free communal WiFi, use of a business centre for printing and computer access, a games & TV room (also available for private hire) and a fully equipped fitness room. A team of on-site property managers, resident service associates and maintenance staff will be on hand to take care of resident requests promptly.

The Bow Square apartments are designed for modern living with spacious interiors and are filled with natural light thanks to extensive glazing. Residents will have access to private outdoor space in the form of terraces and balconies, many offering sweeping views of the city, in addition to the private courtyard where residents will be able to enjoy the public art in the landscaped gardens.

Prices for the apartments at Bow Square start at £750 per calendar month for a one-bedroom apartment, and two-bedroom apartments start from £1,050 per calendar month. Furniture hire is also available from as little as £60 per month. For further information or to express an interest please call
