The area where the centre once stood has now been opened up to show passers-by what is in store for the city. The historic walls will also begin their restoration work after some areas have been covered for 30 years.
The iconic Bargate Monument is now being used as the marketing suite for the development and includes a timeline detailing the history of the site.
The 400,000 sq ft development by Tellon Capital will feature 24 retail and restaurant units together with five retail pavilions that will unite the scheme with the other retail elements in the city centre. 30% of the scheme will be new public realm that will comprise multifunctional space with seating, creating a two-sided retail street.

Councillor Christopher Hammond, Leader of Southampton City Council said: “The centre opened in 1989 and was a key city retail outlet for many years. The changing landscape of the business district led to its closure a few years ago, and the process of rejuvenating this iconic area is now well underway.
Following public consultation, the redevelopment will be a vibrant mixed use scheme, opening up a long hidden area of the city’s medieval walls. We welcome Tellon Capital’s investment in Southampton and celebrate this key milestone, further strengthening Southampton’s role as the powerhouse of the south coast.”
The residential element of the development will include 152 one and two-bedroom apartments within the Bargate Quarter. There will also be 185 student units providing 451 beds.
The development team includes Brasier Freeth and GCW acting as leasing agents, Architect Corstorphine and Wright, Project Managers GVA Second London Wall and Stace, Mace are acting as Quantity Surveyor and Mcgregor Smith have been appointed as landscape architects.
