Southampton City Council has approved the appointment of Sandy Hopkins as its new Chief Executive at today’s Full Council meeting. Today’s decision comes after the city council’s Chief Officer Employment Panel unanimously recommended her appointment.
Sandy has successfully led Havant Borough Council since September 2007, and East Hampshire District Council since October 2009, as Chief Executive for both organisations. She fought off strong competition for the Southampton role and will take over from the current Interim Chief Executive, Richard Crouch, in the new year.
Sandy’s passion and commitment for public services has seen her working in various roles within local government and she has an excellent track record of providing leadership that delivers success. In addition to her Chief Executive role at both councils, Sandy is currently Chairman of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Chief Executives’ Group. Sandy also participates in national government initiatives to improve public services including the national Joint Chief Executives’ Group and is the Hampshire Chief Executive on the national Local Government Association (LGA) Chief Executive Officer Sounding Board.
Commenting on her appointment, Sandy said: “I am so thrilled to have this great opportunity to be the new Chief Executive of Southampton City Council. I am passionate about public services and getting up every morning to make a difference to people’s lives and the places they live and work is the best job in the world.
"As a local who has been able to enjoy all this great city has to offer I now look forward to being part of the team which delivers hundreds of services to residents, businesses and visitors every day. I am particularly excited to have the chance to work with the many fantastic public, private and voluntary partnerships which work so well together to shape this wonderful city and ensure its future success at local and global levels”.
Announcing the appointment Councillor Christopher Hammond, Leader of the Council and chair of the Chief Officer Employment Panel, said: “I am delighted that the council has agreed to appoint Sandy Hopkins as the next Chief Executive. She impressed us with her excellent track record, leadership experience, partnership approach, and ability to deliver innovative services. I am confident she has the skills and passion to take the city to the next level and lead us through the challenges and opportunities ahead.”
