Multi award–winning specialist housebuilder and brownfield developer Inland Homes has welcomed dignitaries from Southampton City Council to its Chapel Riverside development, on the banks of the River Itchen, to celebrate breaking ground on the scheme’s third phase.
Attendees at the event, including the Leader of Southampton City Council, Councillor Christopher Hammond, visited the site of the former town depot close to Ocean Village to mark the significant progress being made on the pioneering and popular 457 home scheme.
The third phase of homes will include 132 one and two bedroom apartments, all with allocated parking and premium specifications. The phase is expected to be launched off-plan this Spring with completions from Spring 2020 onwards.
Chapel Riverside is one of Southampton’s main regeneration opportunities and has an approximate GDV of £100m. It is transforming the former town depot with a range of homes, from one bedroom to family properties, all located in a walkable environment with easy access to the river and Southampton city centre.
The first phase of 72 one and two bedroom apartments sold quickly and residents were welcomed in summer 2018. The second phase - constructing a new sea wall - completed at the end of 2018. Final completion of the entire prime waterfront site is expected in 2022.

Our ongoing partnership with Inland Homes plc is part of a radical scheme of improvement in this area of prime waterfront land in Southampton, and is integral to our ambitious plan for economic growth and development within the city.
“The creation of over 450 new homes at the Chapel Riverside site and a further 350 at the Meridian Waterside development form part of the Itchen Riverside VIP area, which is one of seven key areas re-shaping the landscape of the city, creating desirable waterfront dwellings and accompanying landscapes, improving access, creating new jobs and promoting further investment in Southampton.”
The partnership between Inland Homes and Southampton City Council has been so successful that it was recognised at the ‘Oscars’ of the national house building industry, the What House? Awards last November, winning a coveted ‘Silver’ in the Best Partnership category.
The Chapel Riverside site is being transformed with 300m of river flood defences, and the reconstruction of a new underground surface water storage tank for Southern Water. The scheme will include residential properties in a mix of heights and building types, and will feature a new square with cafes, restaurants and shops as well as spaces for retained and enhanced marine industry and activities.
Inland Homes is also the developer behind another successful Southampton riverside site, Meridian Waterside. Phase one and two of Meridian Waterside are completed and phase three was launched in January 2019. Meridian Waterside is a major scheme of 352 homes marking a new gateway into Southampton via road, minutes’ walk from Southampton City Centre. Inland is building four phases in total, all set within private gardens.
The two sites are kick-starting the long term regeneration plans for Itchen Riverside, as identified by Southampton City Council in its ‘VIP’ programme.
