Savills have been employed to prepare a masterplan and submit planning applications for Millennium & Copthornes proposed new hotel, The Millennium Hotel Ocean Village, at Ocean Village, Southampton. This hotel will form the heart of a masterplan for Ocean Village that is being prepared by Savills alongside international London based architects Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo on behalf of the landowners, MDL.

MDL is Europes largest marina operator, and aspires to create a premier marine events destination on the south coast of England, joining forces with other cities nearby in attracting new world class yachting and maritime events.

The Challenge Business, the organisation which runs the Global Challenge round-the-world yacht race, is still based at Ocean Village and operates its fleet of yachts from the marina, and uses Ocean Village for corporate entertaining.

MDLs vision is to provide Southampton with an urban waterfront quarter that will further raise the citys profile around the world. This successful, sustainable and memorable waterside destination will contain an exciting mix of uses. With the luxury hotel at the heart, the masterplan also proposes about 125 residential units, over 10,000 sqm of office accommodation, a new Innovation Centre to assist fledgling businesses linking with the Southampton Oceanography Centre, and a new multi-storey car park to the rear of the site. The current waterfront car park will provide an events space for tented villages, and corporate entertaining, and will provide a plaza alongside the upgraded promenade around the waterfront in which to sit and enjoy Ocean Villages natural amphitheatre for boats and events.

Gavin Hall, a planning consultant at Savills who is managing the 50million masterplan commented that, Dialogue has been ongoing with Southampton City Council over the past two years, and consultation events with local residents and tenants were held last year. Plans are now being finalised, in order to lodge a planning application to the Council this summer. With a fair wind, it is hoped that the scheme will start on site early in 2006 with the hotel up and running for 2008. The announcement of Millennium & Copthorne gives certainty to the plans, and it is a huge profile raiser for the City, with an iconic building acting as a gateway on the waters edge. It will give local residents an urban waterfront quarter in which to work, live and socialise, and engender pride in their city.
