High Street plans to be unveiled

2 July 2008

Plans to enhance Southampton High Street will be displayed in an exhibition next week.

In August works will begin to repave the popular street, widen the footways, plant new trees as well as adding street furniture and new lighting.

The works are expected to last for about 10 months and once completed will radically enhance the area and will be a boost for businesses as well as shoppers.

The High Street will be made one way during the scheme, which is costing more than £1 million. Parking will still be available on High Street, although reduced.

“These works are essential for the High Street, said Cabinet member for Environment and Transport, Councillor Gavin Dick.

“After the works are completed this area will be much safer for pedestrians and vehicles and the High Street will look fantastic.”

The scheme is part of a much wider plan to improve access from the top of the city to the waterfront.

The council and other partners are ploughing £22 million into improving the city’s highways this year – the biggest ever spend made into our roads.

The public exhibition will be in the Dolphin Hotel on July 3 and 4. Residents are urged to come along and view the plans.
