Parking in all of Southampton’s council-owned on-street parking bays in the city centre will be free as part of a special Christmas parking offer that will apply after 3pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the run up to Christmas (from 24 November until 17 December).
In addition to this, the maximum two-hour stay and evening parking charges will not be enforced in the same bays during these hours and you will be able to park at Eastgate Street car park for just £5 per day from 24 November.
This festive offer is the result of negotiations between the council and the Hampshire Chamber of Commerce and it is hoped that the initiative will benefit city centre visitors and businesses alike.
Councillor Simon Letts, leader of the council, said: “The Christmas parking initiative demonstrates how we are working with the business community on initiatives which I hope will also include some Christmas lights next year. The offer of free on-street parking will benefit local businesses and stimulate visitor numbers on weekdays, which are typically less busy in the run up to Christmas.”
Simon Rhodes, chair of the Future Southampton project and Managing Partner at Trethowans Solicitors, said: “Future Southampton really wanted to help support Southampton’s businesses in the run up to Christmas. So we worked closely with Councillor Letts and the council to achieve some free parking for shoppers. Now that’s been kindly offered by the council, we hope it’s going to be an even better Christmas for all traders in the city centre.”
