The Station Quarter

The Station Quarter has been identified in Southampton’s City Centre Master Plan as one of the seven VIP schemes which will transform the city.

With more than five million trips made annually through Southampton’s Central Station, there is a need and opportunity to create an arrival experience fit for a major city.

The programme of improvements has already started. In June 2012 the following were opened

  • A new entrance to the southside of the station

  • New retail and ticketing facilities

  • A new southside forecourt

Attention is now focused on

NORTHSIDE – PUBLIC REALM IMPROVEMENTS

  • Striking public realm upgrade to the station forecourt

  • Improved interchange with the bus network

  • An amphitheatre

  • Artwork inspired by the history of the Station Quarter

This £5.6 million investment programme will be delivered in phases and funded through a variety of sources including:

  • Council’s Local Transport Plan

  • DfT’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund

The longer term plan is for major development on the south side

SOUTHSIDE - DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY

Major changes are proposed to the south of the station based around a remodelling of Western Esplanade and Mountbatten Way. This will create major development sites adjacent to the station.

Phase 1 provides a substantial opportunity centred around a new station square to include:

  • A station hotel

  • Serviced office accommodation

  • Retail units

  • New homes

  • A new boulevard link to John Lewis
