Final report - 17 December 2004

To undertake research with schools and third sector support agencies to identify reasons for low aspiration among 14-16 year olds and to identify ways of broadening horizons through bridging activities between school, community, and the world of work. This research will focus on young people at risk of exclusion or of leaving school without any qualifications.

  • Desk analysis of existing research on the reasons for low aspiration and school exclusion in 14 16 year olds and their long term effects

  • An assessment of the level of school exclusions and non-qualification in Southampton

  • Further research with Southamptons schools, third sector support agencies, and 14-16 year olds to fill gaps in the desk analysis and tie it to a local context

  • Methods of tackling the issues raised. This should include but not be limited to bridging activities between school, the community, and the workplace.

  • An assessment of the Southamptons capacity to implement any suggestions made

  • For further information on this research please email Tony Maybery at Fairbridge Solent.
